Garage Sales. Oh, how they inspire me…

This weekend was exhausting, but fruitful. Fruitful in so many different ways… Garage sales are amazing for inspiration for someone who writes contemporary fiction. Why, just take this past weekend and all the lovely things surrounding this sale!

The night before, my mother informed me that we were moving all their living room furniture outside because she had a brand new set coming in the coming week. Okay. Sure. What she FORGOT to mention was that it had been 15 years since they last had this set brought in, and she had no clue how the furniture company guys got it into the house. So as I stood there, holding up a sofa (a sleeper sofa, no less, which is like five times heavier than a regular sofa) that wedged itself into the main hallway and wasn’t moving, I realized that whole “measure twice, cut once” thing had some merit.

Also…it hurts like the ever-loving wrath of God to have a couch dropped on your foot.

Needless to say, the couch did not make it out to the garage sale. And neither did my sanity.

At one point, my mother dragged her set of encyclopedias out to the sale. Yes, my parents still had encyclopedias. Do not ask how many layers of dust were on these suckers. I scoffed and said nobody would touch them, but then I said I would take a few because I could think of some craft projects they might be fun for. (And snickered at the imagined look of horror Hubs would have on his face when I showed up with them…hehehe)

God proved me a liar when someone came up and bought those encyclopedias. The whole set. When we asked what they were going to do with them, the mother informed us that they have school-aged children and they would likely need encyclopedias for school stuff later on.

I’m sure, sometime later this year, when her daughter is doing a Social Studies report and talking about our current president, Mr. Ronald Reagan, they might come to regret that impulse purchase…but hey. Buyer Beware.

At one point, I was helping a lovely lady box up her purchases, when I overheard the following tidbits from behind me. And I couldn’t stop laughing.

Would you believe me if I told you the conversation revolved around poop bags? Yes, like the bags you take with you when you take your dog for a walk. Poop. Bags.

Garage sales are awesome. There’s nothing better than unloading your house of 90 pounds of junk priceless treasures on unsuspecting victims lucky neighbors.

No returns.

Too funny with the poop bags!! At least the encyclopedias sold ~ when my pap passed away, he had loads of encyclopedias and other books, I couldn’t even get a library to take them for free, said everything was outdated and people now use the internet. Sadly the days of book reports and physically opening a book for research are over. Have a good day Jeannette!
